The Pet Market

By far one of the most fascinating places I saw was the pet market located near Dongtai Lu. This place had a wide array of live animals for sale including hundreds of crickets ranging in size from tiny to huge.  Cricket collecting and cricket fighting are apparently popular hobbies among Shanghai men. Little cricket jars could be bought with specially made caps that magnified the sounds of the crickets singing. People like to put them next to their beds at night so the cricket songs will lull them to sleep.
