At the Shanghai International school we had a chance to observe art, math, English, Chinese language and Chinese culture classes. We were impressed with how focused and attentive the students were throughout the 40 minute classes and how enthusiastically they responded to the teacher’s directives. Choral drills were the norm. Though the classes were predominately teacher centered we did not see a single instance of anyone being fidgety, bored or disruptive. Pressure to do well academically is intense. The importance of getting good grades is the only thing most Chinese students worry about year after year.

Each morning students do about 15 minutes of eye strengthening exercises. During these exercises they use their fingers to gently massage the area around their eyes, their temples, behind their ears, and finally their necks. Soothing music is played on the loudspeaker accompanied by a speaker counting out yi..er..san... yi....er.....san.....(one, two, three...one....two...three...) very slowly. As well as relieving eyestrain I guess these must be great exercises for overall relaxation. It would be very interesting to try these the exercises out with students at our school.
